The Conflicted Heart in Fiction and Poetry
William Faulkner said that “the human heart in conflict with itself” is the only thing worth writing about. In this course, we’ll look at some stories and poems better appreciated by identifying that foundational conflict. Stories include “The Christian Roommates” by John Updike; “The Sisters” by James Joyce; “The Use of Force” by William Carlos Williams; “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid; ““Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway; and poems by Marianne Moore, William Stafford, and others."
